Avian Flu Facts


What is the Flu (“Influenza”)?
Respiratory infection, spread through coughing & sneezing.

What are Influenza symptoms?
Rapid onset of fever, chills, body aches, sore throat, non-productive cough, runny nose and headache.

What is Avian Influenza (“Bird Flu”)?
An influenza virus in form of avian flu strain.

How is Avian Flu spread?
Birds of all species are thought to be susceptible. Mainly through contact with bird droppings, manure, handling infected birds, eating sick, undercooked chicken.

Why do we care about Avian Influenza?
It is spreading among birds populations in several countries. Has the potential to mutate to a human strain of the virus.

What is a pandemic?
A geographically widespread epidemic of disease.

What can you do to prevent Influenza?
Practice good health habits and stop the spread of germs. Wash your hands and use hand sanitizer. Cover your coughs and sneezes. Stay away from others when you are sick!
