Frequently Asked Graduation Questions

Do I need to apply for graduation?
Application forms are available in the Registrar's Office, Room 1-401Q. Completed forms are used to enter names into the graduation program, reviewed after graduation to determine degree/certificate completion and followed up with placement information. Application forms must be completed prior to April 18 to ensure your name placement in the graduation program.  However, students can still apply for graduation after this date and participate in the ceremony.

Are guest tickets required for graduation?
To date there hasn't been a need to issue tickets for the graduation ceremony. However, graduates are strongly encouraged to limit their guests to four friends or family members. The afternoon time slot for graduation was chosen to allow friends and family ample time during early evening hours for a post ceremony celebration.

How long does the graduation ceremony last?
The ceremony typically last about one hour and 45 minutes. All graduates are expected to remain seated with their college classmates for the entire program.

How do I get a cap and gown for the ceremony?
If you did not order through your program, caps and gowns can be purchased on campus during the third week of April. The cost for a cap, gown and tassel is $15.00. Tassels may be purchased separately for $5.00.

Graduates who are off campus completing internships may make special arrangements for purchase by calling the Student Life Office at (320) 308-5922. Caps and gowns are all black.

What if I already own a cap and gown?
Graduates who already own an all black cap and gown may wear those during the ceremony. Tassels may be purchased through the Student Life Office.

Graduating with honors?
Students who qualify for the President's List will be listed separately in the program and will also be recognized during the graduation program. Honor cords are only worn by honor society members.

Are diplomas presented at the graduation ceremony?
You will receive a mock diploma at graduation. Your official diploma will be mailed to you after grades are finalized and the Office of Records and Registration confirms your graduation. Diplomas and/or certificates are mailed out approximately three to five weeks after graduation.

What if a graduate or a guest needs special assistance to participate or attend the ceremony?
Graduates should contact the Commencement Coordinators, Bev Schmidtbauer (320 308-5406) or John Haller (320 308-5922) to communicate their individual needs. All facilities are accessible. A sign-language interpreter is on stage during the ceremony.

What parking is available?
The ceremony takes place in downtown St. Cloud during the regular work week. There are a number of ramps and surface lots available near the Civic Center, however, graduates and their guests are encouraged to park at St. Cloud Technical College and utilize the free motor coach shuttle to and from the Civic Center.

Can I prevent my name from appearing in the commencement program?
This can be indicated on the Application For Graduation, which is submitted to the Office of Records and Registration.
