  • Adults (18 yrs or older), who have a valid Minnesota or Wisconsin driver’s license, there are two ways:
  • Take the knowledge (permit) test and the riding (endorsement) test at a state exam station.

  • Minor (younger than 18 years), you must take our basic course first, then take the knowledge (permit) test and the riding (license) test at a state exam station.

Miscellaneous Questions:

  • Do you keep a waiting list for a particular class?

No. All registrations are received on a first-come first-served basis.

  • How long do I have to wait before taking a course?

The waiting period for the basic and experienced courses is usually two or three weeks.  However, courses fill up fast in April and May, so the wait can be up to two months during that time.  To enroll in a course in April or May, you should register soon.  The wait for moped and scooter courses is usually less than a week.

  • Can special times be reserved for a group?

Yes.  Motorcycle clubs and/or groups can reserve an Experienced Rider Course, Seasoned Rider Seminar or Group Rider Seminar.  Call 320-308-0015 to discuss possibilities.

  • Do I have to sign a waiver of liability?

Yes. Participation in the course and use of our equipment may result in serious bodily injury; including strains, fractures, partial or total paralysis, other temporary and permanent disabilities and even death.  All students under 18 years of age must have a parent or legal guardian sign the waiver.

  • How many times can I take the class?

We can only test a student twice for the skills test (endorsement). We can never give a student a third skills test. If the student has taken the skills test at DVS and failed, we can only test them one additional time. If the student has taken the skills test twice at the DVS and failed, we can test them, as part of the course, to earn their MSF course completion card, but that test cannot be used to stamp their permit. The permit cannot be stamped on a third skills test attempt regardless if they pass or fail.

  • What if I can’t attend all of the sessions or I am late for class?

Curriculum standards require 100% attendance at both the Classroom and the Range. Coach/instructors will dismiss anyone who is late or misses any part of the entire course. There is no refund should this happen.

  • Can I split the classroom and the range exercises over several weeks?

No. The program is designed for a fluid experience. You cannot take the classroom one week and the range another week.

  • What about the weather?

Range exercises for both basic and advanced rider courses will run in all weather conditions. Be prepared for rain, snow, wind, cold or heat. We suggest that you check the forecast for the weekend prior to your arrival at the range. You may wish to dress in layers for warmth during colder periods or bring rain gear. The only time the range will be postponed is if the weather turns severe.  If a course is canceled it will be posted on the web at www.ctectraining.com.  Participants are responsible for checking the web for announcements.  Phone calls will not be made.

Definitions of bike types:

  • Moped:

A moped is a motorized bicycle.  For the purpose of this course, it must be street legal, be 50cc or less, have a maximum of two horsepower, and not be capable of speeds exceeding 30 miles per hour on a flat surface.  A moped can be ridden by anyone with a valid driver’s license without taking a moped course or test.  Anyone 15 years of age or older can legally operate a moped once they have completed the moped safety course and passed the knowledge and skills test at the Department of Vehicles Services.

  • Scooter:

In Minnesota a scooter can be either a motorcycle or a moped, depending on its engine size, engine power, and top speed.  Most scooters are classified as motorcycles and require a motorcycle license to ride them legally.  The Minnesota Motorcycle Safety Center recommends that all scooter riders take a motorcycle safety course/basic rider course.  A specific class has been created just for scooters, Scooter Basic Rider Course.  In this class the participants with scooters are required to ride their own scooter on the course.
